What Happens to Landfill Equipment When the Job Is Done?

Landfills are a vital part of every community. Often incredibly large operations, they manage waste with large fleets of heavy equipment. But where do landfills send their equipment when replacing their fleet? For many landfills around the country, the answer is GovDeals.

The GovDeals marketplace handles heavy equipment from landfills in all conditions and stages of the life cycle. Whether that is at the end of use-cycle, or when it has become inoperable, landfills across the country regularly sell their heavy equipment of all conditions to GovDeals' base of over 1.8 Million registered buyers.

Normal End of Life: Twin Oaks Landfill

The Twin Oaks Landfill (also known as the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency) provides a range of landfill and recycling services to the Greater College Station Area. They have sold over $1.2M worth of surplus with GovDeals since 2019.

Most recently, this 2019 John Deere 850K Dozer was sold on GovDeals from the Twin Oaks Landfill. The agency’s Deputy Director Samantha Best and their Account Manager Kaleb Schumann work together to find reasonable reserve prices based on market conditions and are often surprised when the auction out performs their predictions. “Sam and I both look for similar assets and agree on a price that the agency can sell the asset for.” Those reserve prices are often beat - to the delight of the agency and the board.

Sold AS IS, WHERE IS: The City of Wichita Falls

The City of Wichita Falls operates the landfill for their community and according to one city employee had “a graveyard of heavy equipment that is going to be difficult to move.”

The GovDeals buyer base knows that the assets sold are "AS IS, WHERE IS” and that they are responsible for the removal of all items, even those difficult to move pieces of heavy equipment. Take for example this 1997 CAT 627F. This piece of equipment had been sitting behind the landfill garage for years. In disrepair, inoperable, and certainly for parts only, this asset sold to a regular buyer and was removed at no expense to the city.

What was once an unused motor scraper taking up valuable space in a high traffic area, had been turned into a revenue generating project for the city, receiving 46 bids and over $25k.

Have a Trade-In Offer? We Can Beat It: The City of Brownwood

Often agencies will work a trade in deal or will receive a buyout option from 3rd party vendors. That was the case for The City of Brownwood and their 2020 CAT D8T Dozer that was in use at their landfill. The GovDeals platform allows Brownwood and all agencies to set a reserve price, ensuring their equipment will not sell below a trade in offer.

One landfill employee said “I don’t care who it sells to, I just need it off my site so I can put the new one into service. I’d love for it to beat the trade-in offer, though."

A large re-seller offered $250,000 for their equipment. The GovDeals auction shattered the trade-in offer by more than 30%, closing for $329,000. A massive win for the city. Without the GovDeals auction, the city would have lost out on an additional $79,000!

Every agency handles their fleet and inventory differently. Some agencies have a regular replacement schedule, while others use the asset until it is totally inoperable. Either way, when your agency has assets at the end of their cycle, auction them on GovDeals to maximize the return on your investments and get them sold!
